OPEN VS SPECIFIC CATEGORY DRONE OPERATIONS
Commercial drone operations can be carried out in the Open or Specific Category as long as the flights meet the requirements of the Open Category or the relevant Operational Authorisation (Specific Category).
Insurance meeting EC785/2004 must be in place for commercial drone activities regardless of category.
If you plan on only flying drones below 250 g then flying in the sub 250 g Open A1 category will give you the most advantages. With anything heavier you will start to see limitations and over 500 g it starts to become much more restrictive to be flying in the Open Category rather than in the Specific Category under a PDRA01 Operational Authorisation.
You can find out more about the Open Category from this CAA publication (CAP 2012).
If you would like help deciding on which category you would be best conducting your drone operations in then please get in touch with the team.
OPERATIONAL AUTHORISATION PDRA01
Currently there is only one Pre Defined Risk Assessment Operational Authorisation available from the CAA. It provides the ability to operate drones up to 25 kg within 150 m of an industrial, commercial, recreational or residential area, as well as being able to overfly uninvolved people (not crowds) as long as a separation distance of 50 m is maintained (30 m on takeoff and landing).
The risks and mitigations are “pre defined” by the CAA and it is up to the operator of drones to demonstrate they can meet the stipulated mitigations. This is done via having the correct training (GVC) and by having an Operations Manual (vol 1 and 2). Global Drone Training has support programmes that guide operators through the process of application and renewals of Operational Authorisation PDRA01.
You can find out more about the available support programmes in our shop here.
If you want to discuss what is the right approach for your drone operations then please get in touch with the team.
OPERATIONAL AUTHORISATION OPERATING SAFETY CASE
For any drone operations that do not fit within Operational Authorisation PDRA01 then an Operating Safety Case (OSC) that includes a volume 1, 2 and 3 must be presented to the CAA.
Unfortunately, and almost always frustratingly, the process is cumbersome, infinitely complicated and can take months to complete. Global Drone Training does its upmost to make this process as quick and efficient (and as cost-effective) as possible. We have successfully achieved dozens of OSC approvals and with our experience and IT expertise, we are constantly working to improve the process even further.
Up to now, we have supported applications in spraying (cleaning buildings and for agricultural use), delivery of goods, cleaning and de-icing of aircraft, Drone-in-a-box operations, forestry surveying and wildlife research, reduced separation in urban areas and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations.
To arrange an initial discussion please get in contact with the team.
REGULATION, HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE SUPPORT
Given the excellent experience amongst the team, Global Drone Training is able to provide expert knowledge around drone regulation matters as well as provide support with most drone hardware. Software plays an increasingly important part of safe drone operations and utilising it properly can make a real difference to both those responsible for drones and also for Remote Pilots.
Global Drone Training support programmes great assist in making the day to day running of complicated drone operations as straightforward as possible.
